The Gift

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household….

Proverbs 31:26-27

I found out early this week that my good friend’s mother had passed away at age 93. I never met her, but as I read her obituary, I realized that I knew her.

I knew her because my friend shares so many of the personality and character traits I discovered about her. It was uncanny reading that because it described him perfectly.

First, she was loyal. She was married for 55 years; she was a life-long member of her church and a faithful servant, working in many of the church’s activities. That’s exactly like her son, my friend. Not only is he loyal and faithful, but he’s a servant, working diligently to make things better.

She belonged. She was a member or a part of many of her community’s activities. My friend is a joiner and a leader. He is a part of our specialty’s elite as a servant leader.

I suspect that she had a dry and biting wit. My friend is the funniest person I’ve ever been around, even when he’s not trying to be.

Mothers are particular for their sons. And we sons reap much from them. We carry on character traits that are a part of us from a very early age. I can see that it my own sons from their mother. And these traits form a legacy that is passed on to further generations. I see these in my grandsons. Sometimes they say and things they couldn’t have heard or seen from their grandmother, and I know exactly from whence these things came.

God has given us this gift, another of many. My friend is what he is because of his mom, just as I am what I am because of mine. Thank God for mothers.
