“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”.
Romans 12:2
First of all, let me assure you that this post has nothing to do with politics. A wise man once explained to me that the word “politics” is derived from two terms common to us – “poli-“meaning “many.” And “tics”…small blood sucking animals.
Secondly, I put forward what it is about: conforming. Yes, we’ve become a society of people who march in step to someone else. We conform. And we do so to make sure that others see us conforming so that we will be like them and they will be like us. And on it goes. Conformity infects us like a virus. It invades our very souls. Actions which, in days or years past, we would have never considered “ok” become normal, and we shudder at others who seem to shy away. Then, somehow, we forget all about our past beliefs and suddenly what was once aberrant behavior becomes commonplace. Sound familiar?
The esteemed British pastor, Charles Spurgeon once wrote, “Professing Christian on the fence, you do not know what you are losing by your conformity to the world. It cuts the tendons of your strength and makes you crawl when you ought to run. So for your own comfort’s sake and for the sake of your growth in grace, if you are a Christian, be a Christian, and be a marked and distinct one.”
I implore you – “Do not be conformed to this world.”
Great explanation. Even Peter slipped when it was said he was one of “them”. Maybe I need a tshirt that simply says, “I AM ONE OF THEM” and let people ask, one of what?
Bravo Michael. Timely post.
